This episode starring John Pertwee took Doctor Who into new territory. Not only was it the first series to be broadcast in full colour, but the Doctor had been banished to Earth by the Time Lords and the Tardis had been disabled from travelling anywhere in time and space outside Earth's sphere. This meant no more alien planets for a while, but Earth bound adventures.

In many ways this was a progressive idea as the scripts became more inventive and allowed enemies like the Autons to emerge. The Autons very much looked like shop dummies but alive, something that could easily be related to, particularly by children who took a real phobia to real shop mannequins.
